In a recent news conference, Shedeur Sanders addressed the media regarding his mindset as he approaches the final four games of the Cleveland Browns’ challenging season. Despite his status as a rookie quarterback and the pressure to perform, Sanders emphasized that he is not viewing this stretch as an audition for the starting role in 2026. Instead, he is concentrating on making the most of his current opportunities.
Following a matchup against Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward, Sanders reflected on the significance of his remaining games. “This is my life here,” he stated, pointing out that both he and Ward are in different stages of their careers and that they are navigating distinct situations. Sanders stressed the importance of remaining focused on his performance, stating, “I just go here, enjoy my day, work hard, do everything I can… if I’m not, I’m not. It’s nothing in my control.”
Currently, the Browns are enduring a tough season, posting a 3-10 record and facing elimination from playoff contention. Speculation surrounding the team’s future has arisen, particularly regarding their draft strategy, with some analysts suggesting that Cleveland may pursue a quarterback early in the 2026 NFL Draft, especially given their possession of two first-round picks.
Sanders, the 144th overall pick in this year’s draft, has started the last three games for the Browns, and notably delivered his best performance yet against the Titans, accounting for 394 total yards and four touchdowns in a closely contested 31-29 loss. Coach Kevin Stefanski, who has named Sanders as the starting quarterback for the remaining games, highlighted the rookie’s commitment to improvement. “I just think he’s committed to getting better every single week. And that’s what you want,” Stefanski noted.
In terms of statistics, Sanders currently leads all rookie quarterbacks in both passing yards and touchdown passes since taking over as the starter in Week 12. He has thrown for 722 yards and five touchdowns during this span. His remarkable performance against the Titans placed him alongside Joe Burrow as the only rookies to achieve a game with over 350 passing yards, at least three touchdown passes, and a rushing touchdown.
Although the Browns have a mixed record of 1-2 in games started by Sanders, he remains focused and committed to improving week by week. “That’s a long deep thought,” he said when asked about upcoming prospects. He is prioritizing the immediate challenge ahead, which is the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears. “I’m thankful for it, but I’m not content with my situation… with leading this team,” he added, signaling his dedication to fulfilling his role as starting quarterback through the end of the season.
