Special Olympics Angola, established in 2022, is rapidly gaining traction in the Africa region, marking significant advancements in its outreach and collaborative efforts. Under the dynamic leadership of chairperson Jean-Jacques Nzadi Conceição, a former professional basketball player and member of the FIBA Hall of Fame, the organization has seen its athlete participation nearly double, reaching a remarkable total of 1,363 last year.
A pivotal moment for the organization has emerged through a partnership with Manchester City and the global appliance company Midea. This initiative aims to foster healthier, happier, and more connected communities around the world. The program will be rolled out in five countries, incorporating a selected list of community partners, with Special Olympics Angola playing a key role in this effort based in Luanda.
As part of this partnership, Midea is contributing resources and home appliances to transform a community center and football hub into a safe and inclusive environment. The objective is to create an enhanced space that will serve as a gathering point for young individuals to engage in football-based education, develop leadership skills, and improve both physical and mental well-being through direct access to vital resources. This mission closely aligns with the goals of Special Olympics, making the collaboration particularly meaningful. Manchester City’s charitable wing, City in the Community, is eager to connect with young leaders from Special Olympics Angola, aiming to integrate them into a global network that focuses on improving youth health within their communities.
Tom Pitchon, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at City Football Group, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Through this partnership, we are using football and Midea products to uplift the lives of young people around the world. The community football projects we are supporting provide young people in cities across the globe with a home away from home while promoting health, life skills, confidence, new friendships, and leadership opportunities.”
This alliance marks another significant step forward for Special Olympics Angola, which was among the first programs to officially join the Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion, under the guidance of Honorable Rui Luís Falcão Pinto de Andrade, Minister of Youth and Sports. The partnership is projected to benefit 3,085 youth across 128 schools nationwide, including those with intellectual disabilities. Over the next three years, more than 200 educators will receive specialized training to ensure effective implementation of inclusive practices.
As Special Olympics Angola continues to expand its influence, the organization is set to send an observer delegation to the inaugural Unified 3×3 Basketball World Cup in Puerto Rico from December 3 to 7. Their participation reflects a broader ambition to someday host this international event.
