Sydney Sweeney is set to make her mark in the boxing world with her highly anticipated biopic, “Christy,” which has just unveiled its first look following its recent debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Black Bear Pictures released the trailer, showcasing Sweeney in the pivotal role of Christy Martin, a trailblazing professional boxer who earned a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.
The trailer begins with Sweeney’s character reflecting on her journey: “I think I found my thing. I bet most people go their entire lives and they don’t even know what their thing is.” This statement captures the essence of Martin’s life, intertwined with the thrill of boxing and self-discovery.
Accompanied by Stevie Nicks’ iconic “Edge of Seventeen,” the trailer bursts with energetic sequences of Sweeney triumphing in the ring. However, as the visuals transition from her success to the darker aspects of her life, the tone shifts dramatically. The uplifting score diminishes, revealing a harsher reality where Christy faces abuse, particularly from her husband and trainer, James V. Martin, portrayed by Ben Foster.
Directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the screenplay with Katherine Fugate and Mirrah Foulkes, “Christy” marks Michôd’s return to feature filmmaking since the historical epic “The King” in 2019. The ensemble cast also includes Chad L. Coleman as the notorious boxing promoter Don King, and Emmy-winning actress Merritt Wever, who plays Christy’s mother. Ethan Embry takes on the role of her father, while Katy O’Brian portrays Christy’s rival, Lisa Holewyne.
After its world premiere at TIFF on September 5, “Christy” received a mixed reception, currently holding a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 31 reviews. Some critics have described the film as formulaic, while others have celebrated Sweeney’s performance as potentially award-winning.
Fans can look forward to experiencing “Christy” in theaters starting November 7.
