Tim Allen recently experienced a touching reunion with his former television daughter, Kaitlyn Dever, while filming his current ABC sitcom, “Shifting Gears.” Dever, who portrayed Eve Baxter on Allen’s previous show “Last Man Standing” from 2011 to 2021, made a surprise appearance on the set of “Shifting Gears.”
In a delightful moment captured on the show’s official Instagram account, the 72-year-old actor walked into the kitchen to find the 28-year-old Dever casually rummaging through the fridge. Initially taken aback, Allen expressed his shock by grabbing the kitchen counter for support as laughter and applause erupted from the audience. Dever, sharing a lighthearted demeanor, simply exclaimed, “Oh,” before the two embraced, showcasing their enduring bond.
“Last Man Standing” followed the life of Mike Baxter, played by Allen, a marketing executive navigating parenthood with his three daughters, including Dever’s character. Since their time together, Dever has made a name for herself in the industry with roles in notable projects such as “Apple Cider Vinegar” and the acclaimed “The Last of Us.”
The two have maintained a supportive relationship over the years. In December 2019, during the announcement of the Golden Globe Award nominations, Allen had the honor of revealing Dever’s nomination for Best Actress in the miniseries “Unbelievable.” He expressed his pride on social media, stating it was special to celebrate her achievement.
While “Last Man Standing” concluded in 2021, Allen has embraced new roles, including his character Matt Parker in “Shifting Gears,” an auto shop owner faced with the challenges of reconnecting with his estranged daughter Riley, played by Kat Dennings, along with her children. The cast is set to expand this season with the introduction of Luke Macfarlane as Allen’s son Sam.
“Shifting Gears” launched its first season in January, followed swiftly by the second season in October. This project marks another chapter in Allen’s extensive television career, which initially took off with “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999. Reflecting on his journey, Allen remarked on the nostalgic feeling of being back on the Disney lot, where he often passes by the set of “Home Improvement,” signifying a sense of coming full circle.
The show airs on ABC every Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, with episodes made available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
