In remarks made on Tuesday evening, President Trump expressed his desire to negotiate a deal with Iran, contingent upon the country committing to never develop nuclear weapons. “We want to make a deal but we haven’t heard those secret words: ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon,'” Trump stated, emphasizing his preference for a diplomatic resolution. He underscored the imperative of preventing Iran, identified as the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism, from acquiring nuclear capabilities, declaring, “I will never allow that to happen.”
The announcement comes amidst rising tensions, as futures for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude and international benchmark Brent crude saw a slight increase of about 0.7%. These market movements reflect concerns over potential disruptions, especially with the Strait of Hormuz—a critical shipping route for global oil supply—largely under Iranian control.
Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded to Trump’s comments via social media, reaffirming that “Iran will under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon.” This statement was aimed at easing tensions and signaling Iran’s commitment to forgoing nuclear arms.
The backdrop of these negotiations features increased U.S. military presence in the Gulf region, with a substantial naval armada comprising two aircraft carriers and notable air force buildups—the largest seen since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. During his State of the Union address, Trump highlighted Iran’s military advancements, particularly its ballistic missile capabilities, which he indicated pose a significant threat to U.S. national security and that of its European allies. “I will never hesitate to confront threats to America wherever we must,” he asserted, recalling the earlier success in addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
As the situation develops, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva on Thursday. This meeting is viewed as a crucial opportunity to seek a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing tensions, amid warnings that further conflict could erupt if discussions fail.
