The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is set to launch the “Government Blockchain Academy,” an initiative aimed at fostering innovation within the public sector through specialized education and implementation programs leveraging emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI). This announcement was made on September 15, 2023, and highlights a partnership with the Exponential Science Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting the adoption and education of advanced technology.
The primary goal of this Academy is to assist governments in driving transformative change and addressing specific challenges in five key areas: inclusive digital finance, transparent governance, supply chain integrity, climate resilience, and digital identity solutions. By bridging the gap between education and practical application, the initiative seeks to enable governments and authorities to deploy blockchain solutions to tackle pressing development issues.
Irena Cerovic, Innovation Team Leader at UNDP Europe and Central Asia, emphasized the organization’s commitment to institutional innovation. She noted that the Academy offers a pathway for countries to explore and implement new ways of addressing complex development challenges, thereby enhancing transparency, inclusion, and resilience.
The Government Blockchain Academy will provide a variety of learning options, including in-person workshops, online modules, and leadership forums designed to meet the specific needs of the public sector. Participants from governments will have access to tailored resources, expert advisory support, and guidance throughout their digital learning journey. Each governmental team will benefit from structured assistance in identifying use cases, developing requirements, and collaborating with both Academy experts and industry partners.
The overarching objective of the project is to co-create scalable and impactful blockchain initiatives in partnership with local governments that align with national priorities, ultimately contributing to improved governance and public service delivery.
Furthermore, the Academy aims to serve as a global hub for dialogue, experimentation, and learning, empowering local officials to engage meaningfully with emerging technologies. Prof. Paolo Tasca, Executive Chairman of Exponential Science, described the initiative as more than an educational effort, but rather a collective blueprint for public innovation that will equip governments with essential tools and talent for the forthcoming wave of digital transformation.
The official launch of the Academy’s first country programs is scheduled for 2026, with preparatory activities such as curriculum design and stakeholder engagement set to commence in 2025. The initiative represents a significant step towards integrating cutting-edge technology into the operations of governments worldwide.
