us crypto user loses 3 million to hacker

In a troubling incident for the cryptocurrency community, a U.S. user has fallen victim to a significant scam, resulting in a loss of approximately $3 million. Onchain investigator ZachXBT revealed that the perpetrator utilized various bridges to transfer stolen funds, subsequently laundering the assets through Over-the-Counter (OTC) venues linked to the Cambodian platform Huione.

The victim, who reported losing 1.2 million XRP from their Ellipal wallet, described the incident as devastating, noting, “That was our whole retirement for my wife and I.” At the time of the theft, the total worth of the stolen XRP was around $3.05 million, but current valuations place it closer to $2.95 million due to market fluctuations.

ZachXBT traced the movements of the hacked funds, identifying the hacker’s address and detailing how the stolen assets were transferred through more than 120 swaps between Ripple and Tron. These transactions occurred on October 12, 2025, before the funds were funneled into Huione-linked OTCs by October 15.

Huione’s name has frequently surfaced in discussions regarding crypto hacks and money laundering. Authorities in Cambodia have taken steps against the site, citing it as a hub for illicit activities. In prior investigations, the platform has faced serious allegations related to money laundering, prompting local officials to block numerous websites associated with these operations.

The increase in security concerns surrounding crypto transactions has prompted U.S. authorities to ramp up efforts to combat financial crimes in the digital currency market. In a recent high-profile case, the U.S. government filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking to seize over 127,000 Bitcoin, valued at around $14 billion, connected to Chinese businessman Chen Zhi, who is accused of orchestrating one of the largest global investment fraud schemes in history.

As cybercriminal activity continues to proliferate within the crypto space, both law enforcement and financial regulators are under pressure to enhance protective measures for users, signaling an urgent need for increased vigilance and security within the burgeoning digital asset landscape.
