This year, the observance known as Columbus Day, also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, falls on Monday, October 13. The day serves as a federal holiday, resulting in many schools taking a break, yet numerous businesses remain operational, and U.S. stock markets will also conduct trading as usual.
Columbus Day is traditionally celebrated on the second Monday of October, honoring Italian explorer Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. However, the day has garnered significant criticism over the years due to the mistreatment of Native Americans during and after Columbus’s voyage. In response to these concerns, President Joe Biden officially recognized the day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021, creating a dual observance where cities and states can choose to celebrate one or both designations.
Adding to the complexity of the holiday, former President Donald Trump recently asserted the importance of retaining Columbus Day, dubbing Columbus “a true American hero.” He criticized what he described as an intense campaign to diminish Columbus’s historical significance, suggesting that recent discussions surrounding the holiday are attempts to slander national heroes and erase cultural heritage.
In terms of business operations on this day, major retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and most supermarkets will be open, adhering to their regular hours. However, smaller local businesses may have altered hours, prompting customers to verify their status before visiting.
Pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens are also expected to operate on regular schedules, though individual pharmacy hours may vary depending on location.
As for financial institutions, most banks typically observe the holiday according to the U.S. Federal Reserve’s schedule, resulting in closures for many. Notably, Chase Bank branches will be open, but the institution has indicated that this day will be considered a holiday for online transactions. Conversely, Bank of America branches will remain closed, and customers are advised to confirm with their respective banks for specific details.
On the financial front, trading will proceed as normal, with both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq stock exchange open for business.
In contrast, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will not operate today, closing all branches. However, private shipping services such as UPS and FedEx will maintain operations for pickup and delivery.
For those engaged in business, the application deadline for Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies Awards is set for tonight at 11:59 p.m. PT, reminding participants to submit their entries ahead of the closing time.
