Will Stein is set to enhance the coaching staff of the Wildcats with the hiring of Jay Bateman, the current defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, as his new defensive play caller. This decision marks an important milestone for Stein as he embarks on his first season as head coach.
Bateman, a seasoned coaching veteran at 52 years old, brings a wealth of experience from various institutions throughout his career. His journey began in 2006 at Elon, where he first took on the role of a defensive coordinator under Pete Lembo. This partnership continued at Ball State when Lembo transitioned to the FBS level in 2011.
In 2014, Bateman accepted a defensive coordinator position at Army, where he made significant strides with the program. Under his leadership, Army’s defense dramatically improved, climbing from 91st in the nation during his debut season to an impressive 8th place by 2018. His success at Army led him to earn recognition as a finalist for the prestigious Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant coach in college football.
After his successful stint at Army, Bateman moved on to North Carolina as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, where he remained for three seasons before parting ways with the program in 2021. Subsequently, he joined Florida as an inside linebackers coach under Billy Napier, where he continued to develop NFL-caliber talent.
This year, when Mike Elko took the reins at Texas A&M, he brought Bateman along as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. The Aggies have since shown remarkable defensive prowess, ranking within the top 50 nationally for scoring and rushing defense, while also placing 21st in pass defense and within the top 20 in total defense.
As Bateman’s aggressive defensive scheme has made a significant impact, Texas A&M ranks 3rd nationally in tackles for loss, with only Oklahoma and Indiana surpassing them in that category. Bateman will maintain his position with the Aggies through their upcoming College Football Playoff games.
In the wake of Bateman’s expected departure, Lyle Hemphill, the Aggies’ associate head coach for defense, will step up as the new defensive coordinator. Bateman’s accomplishments this season include leading the Aggies to a historic 5-0 start in SEC play, their best conference start since 1998. The team has also secured a place among the top-35 nationally in various defensive metrics, including tackles for loss and scoring defense.
Bateman’s track record at both Florida and North Carolina further bolsters his reputation as a defensive strategist. In his debut season with the Gators, Bateman helped produce two NFL Draft picks and contribute to a defense that led the SEC with 22 takeaways. Meanwhile, his tenure at North Carolina featured a remarkable turnaround, producing the fifth-most sacks in the nation during the 2020 season.
This notable hiring decision by Stein reflects a commitment to strengthen the Wildcats’ defensive front as they prepare for the challenges ahead. Further details regarding this development will be available as the situation unfolds.
