While the top layer of snow was removed, a slushy mixture remained, creating treacherous conditions for drivers. As temperatures dipped overnight, concerns grew regarding the formation of black ice, leading several school divisions to announce closures for Tuesday.
Drivers faced significant challenges throughout the day as winter weather continued to affect visibility and road safety. One motorist expressed the difficulties, stating, “Well, the first challenge is it’s a lot of fall, and like you can barely see because the snow is coming down and the road is really slippery. Just watch how you drive and drive slow and just be safe and keep it at a steady pace.”
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) provided an update on road conditions, indicating that while most interstates and primary roads were in minor condition, they were prioritizing the plowing of these roads before addressing secondary routes. VDOT anticipated that refreezing would occur overnight on all roadways, complicating the morning commute, especially on bridges, overpasses, and other elevated surfaces.
