Wyoming Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis has announced her decision not to seek reelection in 2026. Known for her strong advocacy for cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, Lummis cited exhaustion and a desire to focus on impactful legislation as key reasons for her choice.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Lummis expressed her feelings of fatigue from her duties in the legislature. “In the difficult, exhausting session weeks this fall I’ve come to accept that I do not have six more years in me,” she stated, likening her role to that of a “sprinter in a marathon.” Despite stepping back from the race, she emphasized her commitment to continue supporting significant legislative efforts, particularly those aligned with President Trump.
Over the years, Lummis has gained recognition as a leading voice for Bitcoin in Congress, often referred to as the “Bitcoin Senator.” She has been instrumental in promoting several crypto-friendly initiatives, including the US Bitcoin Act, which aims to establish a Bitcoin strategic reserve, and the GENIUS Act, designed to regulate stablecoins. This year, she also introduced legislation seeking tax exemptions for small Bitcoin transactions, reflecting her ongoing dedication to enhancing the crypto regulatory framework in the United States.
Lummis, who has owned Bitcoin since 2013, has publicly praised President Trump’s understanding of the digital asset landscape, calling his approach “transformational” and “forward thinking.” Trump has shown support for the cryptocurrency sector, signing several pro-crypto measures into law since taking office in January.
The senator’s departure from the upcoming election marks a significant moment in Wyoming’s political landscape, particularly for advocates of cryptocurrency regulation, as she leaves behind a legacy of legislative efforts aimed at advancing the interests of the digital asset community.
