Elon Musk’s xAI has made significant workforce cuts, laying off at least 500 members of its data annotation team late on Friday. Employees received emails informing them of the layoffs, which are part of a strategic pivot from generalist AI tutoring roles to a focus on specialist AI tutors. The emails indicated that after reviewing their Human Data efforts, the company plans to scale back generalist positions immediately.

According to the emails, affected employees would continue to receive pay through the end of their contracts or until November 30, but their access to company systems would be revoked on the same day of the layoffs. The data annotation team, which is xAI’s largest, plays a crucial role in the development of Grok, the company’s chatbot, by teaching it to understand and categorize raw data.

On Friday afternoon, the primary Slack channel for data annotators had over 1,500 members, but by that evening, the number had dropped to slightly over 1,000 and continued to decline during reporting. Soon after the layoffs were announced, xAI took to X, formerly Twitter, to announce that it was hiring and aimed to expand its specialist AI tutor team by tenfold across various domains such as STEM, finance, and medicine.

This decision came just days after the company deactivated the accounts of several senior-level employees, including the former head of the data annotation team. In the days prior to the layoffs, employees were pulled into review meetings to discuss their responsibilities and contributions. There was also communication regarding a reorganization effort within the team, with workers being instructed to complete tests designed to assess their strengths and interests for future roles.

The message encouraging the tests was posted by Diego Pasini, the recently appointed team leader. Employees were given limited time to complete assessments that covered traditional areas such as STEM and finance, along with more niche areas related to Grok’s development. These assessments were critical, as the tests would help categorize annotators and supervisors based on their capabilities and interests.

Reaction among staff to the testing requirement was mixed, with some expressing frustration over the tight deadline for completion. Reports indicated that at least one worker faced account deactivation shortly after voicing concerns in the Slack channel.

The laid-off employees were among those expected to contribute to xAI’s pivot towards more specialized roles, as the company seeks to enhance its offerings with a more focused approach. Despite these recent cuts, xAI has emphasized its commitment to expanding specialist roles, highlighting the value these positions hold in the broader context of their AI development efforts.
