The Ethereum Foundation has announced the establishment of a dedicated team, dubbed the “dAI team,” aimed at positioning Ethereum as a foundational framework for artificial intelligence (AI) development. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between the blockchain and AI industries, recognizing the potential of AI as a key driver of Ethereum’s long-term sustainability.
Leading this initiative is Davide Crapis, a core developer at Ethereum, who emphasized the urgency of integrating AI into the Ethereum ecosystem. The dAI team will focus on fostering AI system development within the crypto space while also working to attract leading players from the off-chain AI sector. According to Crapis, the Ethereum Foundation’s commitment to creating a full-time AI operation underscores the growing recognition that AI will significantly influence the network’s future.
In the short term, the dAI team will prioritize the implementation of the ERC-8004 standard, which is designed to facilitate seamless interactions among AI agents on the Ethereum platform. This standard aims to allow AI entities to efficiently discover, verify, and transact using Ethereum’s framework. The proposal for ERC-8004 is currently being finalized, with plans to unveil it at the upcoming Devconnect conference in Buenos Aires in November.
Looking further ahead, Crapis has articulated a vision for a decentralized AI infrastructure intended to prevent corporate monopolization of AI technology. He clarifies that Ethereum does not seek to compete directly with major organizations like OpenAI, but rather views the integration of AI as a similar opportunity for growth, akin to the rise of decentralized finance (DeFi).
Crapis acknowledged that while Ethereum’s infrastructure has largely catered to financial applications, it is essential to adapt and enhance its usability for AI applications as well. This pivot signals a significant evolution in Ethereum’s role within the tech landscape.
The dAI team is also currently exploring research collaborations with prominent Silicon Valley companies, with details expected to be shared in the future. The Ethereum Foundation’s proactive approach aims to ensure that AI technology develops in an inclusive manner, avoiding concentration in the hands of a few powerful entities.
