PayPal is set to enhance its peer-to-peer (P2P) payment capabilities with the introduction of a new feature called PayPal Links. This new system enables users to send money to one another through personalized, one-time links, improving the payment process for individuals engaging in transactions.
Unlike the existing PayPal Me feature, which is primarily a method for users to receive payments without specifying an amount until the receiver does, PayPal Links brings more flexibility. With this new capability, users can request or initiate payments directly. By selecting the link option, entering the required amount, and copying the generated link into a conversation, users can streamline the payment process. This feature is particularly advantageous for one-time transactions, eliminating the need to verify profile information or account details, thereby reducing the number of steps involved and accelerating the overall payment experience.
Additionally, PayPal Links will soon support cryptocurrency transactions within the United States. Users will be able to send popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PYUSD to PayPal accounts, Venmo, and other digital wallets that accept crypto and stablecoins. This functionality will broaden the appeal of PayPal Links, catering to a growing demographic interested in digital currencies.
The rollout of PayPal Links will initially target users in the U.S., with plans for expansion to other markets including the U.K. and Italy later this month. To create a PayPal Link, users can simply launch the PayPal app, input the payment details, and generate a unique one-time link. This link remains private and is tied exclusively to that particular transaction.
These links can be shared through various online platforms such as messaging apps and social media, making it easier for users to handle financial discussions without the hassle of traditional payment methods. However, it’s important to note that any unclaimed links will expire after 10 days, although users retain the ability to send reminders or cancel links as needed.
Once the recipient taps the link, they can easily complete the transaction within the PayPal app, ensuring that fund transfers are processed instantly. Furthermore, personal payments made through this method will remain exempt from 1099-K reporting, providing users with added convenience and privacy.
