Kevin Durant’s foray into the world of cryptocurrency has taken an unexpected turn, revealing both the potential of early investments and the pitfalls of neglecting account management. Durant’s manager, Rich Kleiman, disclosed that the NBA superstar made an early investment in bitcoin after attending a dinner hosted by venture capitalist Ben Horowitz. During this time, both Durant and Horowitz acquired bitcoin using the platform Coinbase. However, they overlooked the crucial step of keeping track of their account credentials.
Kleiman explained that this forgotten account has appreciated significantly over the years, with the value of bitcoin currently soaring to around $117,211. The manager noted the substantial unrealized gains that are unfortunately locked away, stating, “His bitcoin is just through the roof.” Despite complications, Durant and Kleiman have not rushed to recover access to the wallet since the asset continues to rise in value.
In addition to his basketball career, Durant has cultivated a diverse business portfolio through his company, Thirty Five Ventures, which has made investments in several startups, including Coinbase itself. This intersection of sports and entrepreneurial endeavors highlights Durant’s reputation as one of the NBA’s most financially savvy players.
On the court, Durant maintains his status as a dominant force. As he embarks on his 18th NBA season, the 36-year-old forward remains a consistent scorer, boasting an average of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 62 games in the previous 2024–25 season with the Phoenix Suns. Notably, he reached a significant milestone when he became the eighth player in league history to surpass 30,000 career points during February 2025. His remarkable performance also earned him a spot as a Western Conference starter for the All-Star Game that year.
As the NBA landscape shifts with his recent trade to the Houston Rockets as part of a historic seven-team deal, Durant’s dual legacy as an athlete and investor continues to unfold, with both successes and challenges reflecting the complexities of modern financial ventures.
