Flights operating at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field experienced significant delays on Friday due to a telecommunications issue, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
According to statements from American Airlines, the situation arose from a malfunction involving the telecommunications provider responsible for the air traffic control facility overseeing the Dallas-Fort Worth airspace. This incident led to severe restrictions on flights feeding into both major airports.
Several regional airports initially felt the impact but were cleared to resume normal operations shortly before 5 p.m. Officials from Dallas Love Field emphasized that passenger safety remains their top priority and assured that they were in constant communication with the FAA to manage the ongoing situation effectively and reduce disruptions.
In a parallel statement, Southwest Airlines indicated that inbound flights to Dallas Love Field were either delayed or held back at their departure points due to the air traffic limitations. Some flights had to divert to alternate airports, but the airline assured passengers that efforts were being made to realign these flights as soon as clearance from the FAA was received.
The FAA is currently investigating the root cause of the telecommunications failure in collaboration with the service provider. American Airlines further announced that affected travelers could rebook their flights without incurring additional fees.
As the evening progressed, conditions began to improve. By 7:30 p.m., Love Field lifted its flight delays and issued an all-clear. DFW Airport followed suit, rescinding its ground stop around 9:30 p.m. However, the fallout from the telecommunications issue continued to reflect in the statistics: by 11 p.m., over 500 flights at DFW Airport had been delayed, as documented by FlightAware.
The latest data revealed a substantial number of cancellations and delays: DFW Airport reported 510 cancellations and 542 delays, while Love Field saw one cancellation and 211 delays. Travelers are encouraged to check their flight status and monitor for updates on any further delays or cancellations at both airports.
