In late 2023, Tangem, a Swiss technology company renowned for its innovative, “seedless” hardware cryptocurrency wallets, introduced a new device that raised eyebrows within the crypto community. This latest release appeared to contradict the company’s long-standing principle of eliminating seed phrases—those crucial strings of common words that enable users to recover lost cryptocurrency wallets. Traditionally, these seed phrases serve as a single point of failure for wallet security, requiring users to safeguard this information diligently to avoid potential loss.

Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Luzern, Tangem has gained traction with its credit-card-sized wallets that utilize NFC technology to facilitate blockchain transactions. The company’s emphasis on security is underscored by independent audits of its firmware and a robust attestation scheme within the Tangem mobile app. Their design philosophy advocates for a minimalist threat surface, emphasizing ease of use and durability.

For years, Tangem has campaigned against the use of seed phrases, branding them as risky and prone to mishandling. The company’s recovery model allowed users to create backup wallets using additional cards, thus distributing the private key across multiple secure elements without the need for mnemonic phrases. This approach was aimed at making cryptocurrency management accessible and less risky for the average user.

However, in September 2023, Tangem shifted its stance by integrating a seed phrase option into its revamped Tangem Wallet, which also featured a fresh aesthetic and user interface. By early 2024, the company rolled out instructional videos and support pages detailing how to set up wallets using seed phrases, offering options for various lengths, including 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words. This change struck many long-time users as a pragmatic solution, allowing them to transition from standard BIP-39 wallets to Tangem’s system without forsaking the seedless design. Despite this new feature, the brand continues to recommend that users embrace its original seedless methodology.

The motivation behind this strategic pivot appears to be twofold: user demand and enhanced interoperability with existing self-custody solutions. Seed phrases have become synonymous with self-custody in the cryptocurrency space, forming the backbone of most wallet systems. With over ten million devices built around these recovery phrases, Tangem’s option may be seen as a means to attract users looking for a seamless transition to their ecosystem.

While there has been no explicit admission of a sales-driven motive from Tangem, this strategic move allows the company to broaden its market reach by accommodating seed-phrase users, which could ultimately help them maintain their seedless core offering. This aligns with Tangem’s stated goal of becoming a universal solution in the cryptocurrency space.

Tangem’s fundamental belief is that firmware with fixed functions and robust security features can offer significantly more protection for users compared to traditional seed phrases. The rugged design of the wallets, alongside certifications like IP69K, reinforces the company’s commitment to security and usability. The absence of batteries or complex interfaces minimizes user error, making the wallets more accessible to everyday users.

The introduction of the seed phrase option reflects a broader industry trend towards accommodating varying preferences for self-custody options. As providers seek to balance security and convenience, the real challenge lies in executing these solutions effectively. Consumers are increasingly inclined to seek out offerings that protect their assets while simplifying the management of cryptocurrency.

In navigating this dual demand for security and convenience, firms will need to demonstrate their ability to mitigate risks associated with human error without sacrificing the core value proposition of self-custody. Whether users ultimately prefer traditional seed phrases or a more innovative, simplified approach, the winning strategies will be those that effectively blend ease of use with robust security measures.
