Flutterwave, a prominent payments infrastructure firm based in San Francisco and Lagos, has secured a strategic investment from Ripple, a leader in enterprise blockchain solutions for both traditional and digital finance. This collaborative effort marks a significant step in revolutionizing payment systems, particularly across Africa and the global market.

The partnership is anchored on three core pillars: integrating the RLUSD token into Flutterwave’s payment platforms and remittance channels to serve as a primary settlement asset for high-volume transactions; utilizing the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to expedite transaction processing; and creating a unified API that connects Flutterwave’s domestic systems with Ripple Payments, facilitating a more seamless global payment experience.

By integrating traditional payment mechanisms—such as local cards, mobile wallets, and bank transfers—with Ripple’s cutting-edge blockchain technology, this alliance aims to offer businesses enhanced benefits, including guaranteed liquidity, predictable pricing, and real-time settlement capabilities.

Founded in 2016 and currently led by Olugbenga “GB” Agboola, Flutterwave specializes in providing a unified payment infrastructure designed to simplify cross-border transactions. With headquarters in San Francisco and a primary operational hub in Nigeria, Flutterwave empowers merchants to securely process payments across multiple channels.

Among the main offerings of Flutterwave are:

  • Flutterwave for Business: A payment gateway API enabling merchants to accept both local and international payments via various methods, including credit/debit cards, mobile money wallets, Apple Pay, bank transfers, and USSD codes.

  • Send App: A consumer-focused remittance application that allows for the instant transfer of funds from the global diaspora to Africa.

  • Flutterwave Store: A free e-commerce platform that assists small-to-medium businesses in setting up digital storefronts to market products and accept international currencies without the necessity of physical locations.

  • Flutterwave Capital: A financial service offering rapid, collateral-free business loans aimed at helping merchants expand their operations.

This strategic alliance with Ripple represents a forward-looking approach to modernizing payment systems, creating new opportunities for businesses and enhancing the transactional experience for individuals across Africa and beyond.
