Certain Social Security beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their latest monthly payments today as part of the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) December distribution cycle. Specifically, this payment date applies to long-term recipients who have been receiving benefits since before May 1997.

Among those benefitting today are individuals receiving retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or survivor benefits. Additionally, recipients who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) alongside these benefits will also see a payment today. SSI payments were issued earlier on December 1 as part of the SSA’s first payment batch for the month.

According to recent SSA figures, the average monthly benefit for retired workers, who constitute the majority of Social Security recipients, is approximately $2,009.50. For disabled workers, the average monthly payment is about $1,584.46, while those receiving survivor benefits can expect around $1,575.61 each month. SSI beneficiaries receive an average of $717.20 monthly, with the maximum potential payment for an individual capped at $967. Couples eligible for SSI may receive up to $1,450 collectively. Some states also provide supplementary payments to SSI recipients, and specific information on these additional benefits can be accessed via the SSA’s official website.

Looking ahead, the SSA has announced a 2.8% increase in benefits that will take effect in January 2026, marking the agency’s annual cost-of-living adjustment. For retirees, this means an anticipated average increase of $56 per month.

In December 2025, the schedule continues, with most retirement, SSDI, and survivor benefit payments processed on designated Wednesdays, determined by the birth date of the beneficiary: those born from the 1st to the 10th can expect payment on December 10, those born between the 11th and 20th on December 17, and those born from the 21st to the end of the month on December 24. The SSA has made its complete payment schedule for 2025 available online, along with upcoming distributions for 2026.

As of September 30, the SSA has shifted from issuing paper checks to primarily electronic payments. Beneficiaries can opt for direct deposit by providing their banking information through the “my Social Security” online portal. For those without bank accounts, benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a specialized debit card for federal payments.
