Salah's Future at Liverpool: January Exit or Staying Until 2026?

In a developing situation concerning Mohamed Salah, speculation is mounting regarding his future at Liverpool FC. Salah, who signed a lucrative contract extension until 2027 last season, may now be facing a potential exit as early as January. Liverpool’s management, particularly FSG and Richard Hughes, are reportedly weighing the implications of retaining a player seen as a disruptive influence at the club.

Saudi Arabian clubs, particularly Al-Hilal and Al-Qadsiah, are believed to be expressing interest in securing the prolific winger’s services. However, the willingness of these clubs to commit significant financial resources towards a player nearing 34 years old remains uncertain. While the salaries offered by the SPL clubs could be substantial, their tendency to avoid high-profile signings of aging players could complicate negotiations.

Should Salah depart in the winter transfer window, Liverpool stands to alleviate his hefty wage bill, reported at £400,000 per week. This scenario may necessitate a compromise, potentially allowing Salah to follow a path similar to Cristiano Ronaldo, who had his contract terminated with Manchester United in 2022, subsequently paving the way for a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia.

Alternatively, there’s a possibility Salah could remain with the team until the end of the current season. If the Egyptian forward were to miss upcoming matches against Inter and Brighton due to international commitments, this break might provide him with an opportunity to reset and rejuvenate his relationship with Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot. A revitalized Salah could contribute positively during the latter part of the season. When the time comes, the club might find a more suitable recipient for him, with clubs like San Diego FC potentially entering the fray, albeit likely requiring a waiver of transfer fees.

On the other hand, a scenario where Salah stays with Liverpool until 2027 seems increasingly unlikely given the current circumstances. With 18 months remaining on his contract and an estimated £30 million left in wages, Salah still has aspirations for trophies and personal records. However, Slot’s tactics have shifted, utilizing other players in Salah’s position, raising the prospect that Liverpool may pursue a more permanent replacement next summer. Names like Antoine Semenyo, along with younger talents like Yankuba Minteh and Yan Diomande, could be on the club’s radar.

For Salah to see out his contract and achieve his objectives at Liverpool, numerous factors would have to change dramatically. This includes mending his relationship with the head coach and securing his place in the starting lineup, as enduring a role as a substitute on a £400,000-per-week salary would be untenable for both player and club.

As the situation evolves, it appears far more probable that Salah will not conclude his Liverpool tenure as a free agent in 2027. The likelihood of an earlier departure, either in the upcoming January window or during the summer of 2026, appears increasingly plausible. The circumstances surrounding Salah’s future coalesce into a narrative that not many would have envisioned concluding in this manner.
