Yankees Select Right-Hander Cade Winquest in Rule 5 Draft

In a significant move during the Rule 5 draft held in Orlando, the New York Yankees made their first selection since 2011, acquiring right-handed pitcher Cade Winquest from the St. Louis Cardinals. This decision reflects the Yankees’ renewed strategy in adding potential talent to their roster through this unique draft format.

Winquest, 25, emerged as a noteworthy choice among a field of 13 players, with an impressive lineup featuring 12 right-handed pitchers. His performance last season showcased his skills, as he posted a 4.58 ERA over 106 innings, participating in 25 games, including 23 starts, across Single-A and Double-A levels. Notably, Winquest displayed a strong groundball rate of 48%, underlining his ability to effectively manage opposing hitters. His pitching arsenal includes a fastball that typically hovers in the mid-90s and can reach up to 98 mph, complemented by a curveball, cutter, and sweeper. Given his skill set, he is poised to compete for a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen in the upcoming season.

The Rule 5 draft also featured other significant selections. The Colorado Rockies initiated the draft by selecting RJ Petit, a towering 6-foot-8 reliever from the Detroit Tigers, who boasts a 2.44 ERA from 45 relief appearances and two starts last season. The Minnesota Twins added a notable position player to the mix, picking catcher Daniel Susac from the Athletics.

Clubs participating in the draft must pay a fee of $100,000 to select a player and are required to keep that player on the active major league roster for the entire next season, barring injury list placements. Upon removal from the roster, selected players must be offered back to their original clubs for a sum of $50,000.

The Yankees’ last involvement in the Rule 5 draft was in 2011 when they selected right-hander Brad Meyers, who faced challenges due to a right shoulder injury and ultimately never appeared in a major league game.

This year’s draft also saw a wide array of talent chosen by various teams, including:

– Jedixson Paez (Colorado, from Boston)
– Griff McGarry (Washington, from Philadelphia)
– Carter Baumler (Pittsburgh, from Baltimore)
– Ryan Watson (Athletics, from San Francisco)
– Matthew Pushard (St. Louis, from Miami)
– Roddery Munoz (Houston, from Cincinnati)
– Peyton Pallette (Cleveland, from Chicago White Sox)
– Spencer Miles (Toronto, from San Francisco)
– Zach McCambley (Philadelphia, from Miami)
– Alexander Alberto (White Sox, from Tampa Bay)

As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on how these new additions will integrate into their respective teams, with particular interest in Winquest’s potential impact on the Yankees’ pitching staff.
