Apple has officially updated its recommendation for iPhone users, advising them to upgrade to iOS 26. This policy shift comes as the technology giant transitions the iOS 26 update from an optional upgrade to one that is now strongly recommended for users. Individuals with an iPhone 11 or newer model are eligible to download and install this update.
While it remains possible for users to continue using older versions such as iOS 18, they may soon encounter a necessity to upgrade to ensure access to essential security updates. Apple has maintained a consistent update schedule for its operating systems since their inception, and with each new release, it typically rolls out an array of minor improvements and bug fixes. However, many users often hesitate to adopt new updates out of concern for potential issues that such upgrades may bring.
According to insights from the tech blog MacRumors, Apple will still provide security updates for iOS 18 for those who opt to remain on that platform, but this support may be phased out in the coming months. Users who wish to stay current on security patches will need to make the switch to iOS 26, although iOS 18 updates will persist for devices incompatible with the newer operating system.
Highlighting the features of iOS 26, the update introduces a fresh design for the home screen, lock screen, control center, and applications, all branded with the new Liquid Glass aesthetic. One of the most significant upgrades is the integration of Apple Intelligence, which allows devices to perform live translation of text and audio within the Messages app, along with providing translated captions during FaceTime calls. The Apple Intelligence feature will also offer users a centralized view of order-tracking details, summarizing necessary information from emails.
Furthermore, the update includes improved call management tools to filter unwanted calls and messages from unknown numbers. Apple Music now features translated lyrics for select songs in different languages, and a new Games app is available. Another notable enhancement in the Phone app allows users to receive notifications when a live agent is ready to assist them after being on hold.
For those ready to upgrade, Apple recommends plugging the device into a power source and connecting to Wi-Fi. Users should navigate to Settings, select General, and tap Software Update to check for available updates. The update is compatible with all iPhones from the iPhone 11 onward, including the second-generation iPhone SE. It’s worth noting that some features, especially those tied to Apple Intelligence, may only be accessible on the latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 15 Pro series.
Downloading iOS 26 can take between 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on variables such as internet speed, the specific device model, and Apple’s server overload during the rollout period. Users currently deciding whether to update may find it advantageous to transition from iOS 18 to the earlier version of the new operating system, iOS 26.1, which had its release in September.
Although Apple has not made it mandatory for users to update to iOS 26, it has increasingly emphasized this transition, nudging users towards the new software by listing it prominently in the settings menu. Tech analysts emphasize that those aiming to remain secure with the latest patches will ultimately need to update, even as Apple continues to provide support for devices still running iOS 18.
