LaNorris Sellers Expected to Return for Final Season with South Carolina Gamecocks

In a surprising turn of events, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who was previously projected as a top contender for the 2026 NFL Draft, is expected to return to Columbia for another season with the Gamecocks. Pete Nakos from On3 confirmed that Sellers is currently in the final stages of negotiating a deal to extend his time with the team.

Sellers has been a cornerstone player for South Carolina over the past three seasons, starting as the quarterback for the last two. During this period, he has distinguished himself as one of the nation’s premier dual-threat quarterbacks. His impressive collegiate statistics include a 63.2% completion rate, amassing 4,971 passing yards alongside 31 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions. On the ground, he has contributed significantly, rushing for 944 yards and scoring an additional 12 touchdowns, which averages out to 246.4 total yards per game.

However, this past season saw a decline in his overall performance. After a breakout year as a starter, Sellers’ stats dipped to a 60.8% completion rate with 2,437 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. His rushing yards also fell, totaling only 270 with five rushing touchdowns, which brought his average down to 225.6 total yards per game. While these numbers are still commendable, they reflect a noticeable regression compared to prior seasons.

As Sellers enters his third year as a starter, he and the Gamecocks hope to see tangible improvements from him, not only due to his experience but also because he will be working under his third offensive coordinator in as many seasons. The recent firing of Mike Shula has paved the way for Kendal Briles to step in. With a varied background that includes coaching roles at notable programs such as TCU, Arkansas, Florida State, Houston, FAU, and Baylor, Briles is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the South Carolina offense, which saw a decline during the transition from Dowell Loggains to Shula.

Despite the ups and downs in Sellers’ gameplay, his obvious talent has him poised for significant growth in the upcoming season. The decision to return for one more year offers him the chance to refine his skills further and solidify his status as the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback. With the potential for revitalized performance under Briles’ guidance, the South Carolina program and its fanbase are eager to see how Sellers will evolve in his final collegiate season.
