Bryce McGowens, once a lesser-known figure in the NBA, is making waves with his impressive performances for the New Orleans Pelicans after being signed to a two-way contract in July. Having spent the majority of the previous season with the Rip City Remix, the Portland Trail Blazers’ G-League affiliate, McGowens only logged 31 minutes during his time with the Blazers. However, following his transition to the Pelicans, he is starting to draw attention for his contributions during games.
In a recent matchup against the Blazers, McGowens tied his career high with 23 points, showcasing his shooting skills with a perfect 5-for-5 from beyond the arc. He also added seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals during the game, which saw him play nearly 30 minutes—almost matching his total from last season. His standout performance came in the second half, stepping up significantly after teammate Herb Jones was ejected late in the first half due to accumulating two technical fouls. This pivotal contribution helped the Pelicans overpower the Blazers, winning 143-120.
Reflecting on the victory against his former team, McGowens remarked, “It was definitely huge beating my former team. Being with those guys for a year and the coaching staff was definitely huge for me.” His performance not only highlighted his potential but also served as a reminder to the Blazers of what they are missing.
Interim coach James Borrego was impressed with McGowens’s performance, especially under pressure. “You lose Herb and you’re not sure where to go. But Bryce has been steady all year. He’s earned these minutes,” Borrego noted, acknowledging that McGowens’s presence on the court consistently yields positive results. His plus/minus rating of plus-19 was the best on the team during the game.
Throughout the season, McGowens has started five games, averaging 8.8 points and 2.1 rebounds. Recently, his performance has escalated, boasting averages of 15.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over his last six games. Borrego highlighted the impact McGowens has on various aspects of the game, particularly on defense and in transition, praising his work ethic and competitiveness.
McGowens expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in New Orleans, which marks his third team in four years. He stated, “I’m super blessed to be in this position of being in an organization that believes and trusts me… My job is to get after it and do whatever the team needs me to do so we can win.” His journey in the NBA began as a five-star recruit who initially committed to Florida State but later chose Nebraska to play alongside his brother. Drafted in the second round of 2022, he entered the league shortly after coach Borrego was let go from the Charlotte Hornets, making their eventual partnership a surprising yet fruitful development.
Teammates have taken notice of McGowens’s composure and skill. Guard Jordan Poole commended him, stating, “Bryce has been playing amazing… He has such a calm demeanor and just plays the right way.” McGowens is becoming a valuable asset in a promising youthful roster curated by team executives Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver, which includes successful draft picks and trades.
Less than 30 games into the season, McGowens has exceeded expectations and remains focused on his journey. “My expectations were to come in here and work and let the chips fall where they fall,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to competing daily and earning his place on the court.
