The Powerball jackpot has soared to an estimated $1.6 billion, now ranking as one of the largest lottery prizes in U.S. history, according to officials. This colossal amount has been generated after no tickets matched the winning combination in Saturday’s draw, which consisted of the white balls 4, 5, 28, 52, 69, and the red Powerball 20. As a result, Monday’s drawing will mark the fifth-largest jackpot in the annals of Powerball.
For perspective, the current jackpot is now the fourth-largest in Powerball history, following a record-setting $2.04 billion prize won in 2022 by a lucky ticket holder in California, who chose to take a lump-sum payout of approximately $997.6 million. The odds of winning the colossal prize are extremely steep, standing at 1 in 292.2 million.
Winners of the Powerball have the option of either taking a lump-sum payment, which is estimated to be about $735.3 million for this drawing, or they can select the annuity option valued at $1.6 billion. The annuity entails receiving one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each increasing by 5% over the life of the annuity, although both options are calculated before taxes.
Powerball is widely accessible, being available in 45 states, as well as in Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It operates under the oversight of the Multi-State Lottery Association, a nonprofit organization composed of state lotteries. Notably, a portion of the revenue generated from ticket sales is earmarked for supporting public education and various community services across participating states.
