Each year, Americans celebrate George Washington’s birthday on the third Monday in February, with the next observance set for February 16, 2026. This holiday, first established to honor the nation’s first president, became a federal holiday in 1885. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, transformed the celebration into what is commonly known as Presidents’ Day, broadening the tribute to all U.S. presidents. However, despite the colloquial use of Presidents’ Day, the federal government officially recognizes the day as Washington’s Birthday.
On February 16, as residents observe this federal holiday, various institutions will close their doors. Federal government offices will be closed, and most major banks will also shut down in accordance with the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule. While banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, and Citibank will not operate in person, banking customers will still have access to ATMs and online services. Interbank transfers are expected to resume the following business day.
Additionally, the United States Postal Service will halt mail deliveries and close its branches on this day. However, private carriers such as DHL, FedEx, and UPS will maintain their operations. The stock market, including the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq, will also be closed on Presidents’ Day. Schools and libraries generally observe the holiday by closing as well, whereas most supermarkets, restaurants, and pharmacies tend to remain open for business.
As for the broader context of federal holidays, the United States observes a total of 11 federal holidays throughout the year. The 2026 calendar includes numerous well-known celebrations, starting with New Year’s Day on January 1 and culminating with Christmas Day on December 25. Other highlighted holidays include Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19, Memorial Day on May 25, and Labor Day on September 7.
These holidays provide Americans with opportunities to reflect on the contributions of historical figures and notable events, while also offering a break from the routine of daily life. As the observance of Presidents’ Day approaches, it’s a reminder of the foundation laid by Washington and the subsequent leaders who have followed in his footsteps.
