A jury was selected on Monday in a federal court in Oakland, California, during the opening day of the trial involving prominent tech figures Elon Musk and Sam Altman. This high-profile case has already sparked significant public interest, with potential jurors expressing mixed feelings about Musk and the AI technology at the heart of the dispute. Despite these concerns, they assured the court of their ability to remain impartial throughout the proceedings.
Inside the courthouse, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman were seen navigating the security line, while Musk was notably absent. The courtroom experience was further amplified by dozens of journalists who filled an overflow room to capture an audio stream of the day’s events.
The main objective on this day was to assemble a jury of nine individuals who could approach the case impartially. Complicating this task, several jurors expressed negative sentiments about Musk when questioned by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers and the legal teams involved. While these opinions could have posed a challenge for their selection, the judge remarked that only one juror was excused based on strong feelings against Musk. She indicated that many people harbored negative views about the billionaire, yet still had the potential to uphold the integrity of the judicial process.
The jury assembled includes a diverse range of individuals, from a painter to a former Lockheed Martin employee and a psychiatrist. Some jurors even conveyed their skepticism about artificial intelligence as a whole. Ultimately, each juror affirmed their capacity to separate their personal opinions from their responsibility to evaluate the case fairly.
Following the jury selection, OpenAI attorney William Savitt expressed optimism about the chosen jury, stating, “Mr. Altman, Mr. Brockman, and OpenAI are looking forward to presenting their case to that jury. They’re confident in their position and are looking forward to the facts being known.” Savitt emphasized the importance of conveying the truth in the courtroom, affirming that OpenAI’s narrative would align with established facts and documentation.
In parallel to the courtroom activities, Musk has been active on social media, leveraging his platform, X, to spotlight a recent New Yorker investigation that alleged deceptive business practices by Altman. His promotion of the article on the trial’s first day is seen as a strategic move to sway public opinion in his favor.
Outside the courthouse, demonstrators rallied against the rapid pace of AI development, calling for a pause on further advancements in the field. As the trial moves forward, opening statements from both Musk’s and OpenAI’s legal teams are expected to take place on Tuesday, alongside the testimony of the first witness in this landmark case.
