A 74-year-old man named Naiping Hou has been reported missing, leading investigators to uncover concerning details surrounding his disappearance. Hou was last seen on March 16, 2025, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and was officially reported missing on May 4 when relatives discovered his home empty.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is now working in conjunction with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on the case, classifying Hou’s disappearance as suspicious due to the financial anomalies linked to his bank accounts. Recent investigations revealed that over $1 million had been withdrawn fraudulently from Hou’s accounts, which were used to make purchases of gold and cryptocurrency.

Wen Hou, Naiping’s son, described his father as a cheerful individual who enjoyed spending time with family. After a fishing trip together in March, Wen became increasingly worried as his father’s communication habits changed. He started receiving brief text messages that seemed uncharacteristic, often claiming he was tired. The situation escalated when he noticed that his father was unresponsive on his birthday, prompting him to request family friends to check on him the following day.

Upon visiting Naiping’s home, they found it completely vacant—renovated poorly, devoid of furniture, and suspiciously lacking any personal items. The cars were also missing from the garage, raising alarms about the possibility of foul play. Additional visible signs, such as handprints on the garage door and an unkempt lawn, further compounded concerns regarding Hou’s wellbeing.

Wen reported that his father’s cellphone appeared to have been used to send disorienting messages to family members, including one to his wife, instructing her not to return home. This text misleadingly claimed that Naiping would join her on a trip to China, where she was visiting relatives.

Following a deeper investigation into his bank accounts, authorities highlighted extensive fraudulent activity that escalated around the time of his father’s disappearance. Investigators expressed concern for Hou’s safety, focusing efforts on locating him and returning him to his family. Wen has speculated that contractors who had previously worked on the house may be involved in his father’s abduction.

In a bid to bring attention to the case and aid the search, Wen has launched a website featuring photos and information regarding Naiping’s disappearance, offering a $250,000 reward for any information that could lead to his safe return. “The family is heartbroken; we just want him back,” Wen said.

The investigation is ongoing, with both the FBI and local authorities treating the case with high priority, as they work diligently to ascertain the circumstances of Naiping Hou’s disappearance.
