SpaceX’s recent IPO filing has unveiled a wealth of intriguing insights into the company’s financial landscape, particularly highlighting its substantial holdings in bitcoin. The firm’s S-1 form, which marks the official commencement of its initial public offering process, indicates that SpaceX owns 18,712 units of bitcoin. This cryptocurrency was trading at just over $77,000 on Thursday morning, placing the valuation of SpaceX’s bitcoin reserves at approximately $1.45 billion, along with paper gains around $789 million.
The S-1 filing reveals that SpaceX acquired its bitcoin for around $661 million, suggesting that the average value per bitcoin at the time of purchase was about $35,000. Notably, bitcoin last hit that valuation in November 2023. Reports from August of that year indicated that SpaceX had divested a significant portion of its bitcoin assets, which illustrates an active management approach towards its cryptocurrency investments.
Elon Musk, CEO and founder of SpaceX, has emerged as a vocal proponent of digital currencies. Beyond SpaceX’s investments, his other company, Tesla, disclosed in its first-quarter filing that it holds more than 11,000 bitcoins, valued near $900 million at current prices. Early reports from 2025 highlighted how Tesla’s quarterly profits experienced a notable boost, largely attributed to a spike in bitcoin prices that added $600 million to its income in the latter part of 2024.
While SpaceX’s bitcoin holdings are impressive, they remain modest when compared to some industry giants. Strategy Inc., a business intelligence firm, holds over 843,000 bitcoins, translating to a staggering value exceeding $64 billion.
Musk’s embrace of the somewhat whimsical side of cryptocurrencies was exemplified in 2021 when he announced that SpaceX would aim to “put a literal Dogecoin on the literal moon.” While that ambitious goal has yet to materialize, SpaceX is focused on establishing a lasting human presence on the moon. The recent S-1 filing also hinted at Musk’s even grander vision: to create a human colony on Mars with a target population of at least one million. This audacious plan underscores the innovative and bold spirit that SpaceX embodies in its quest to expand humanity’s presence in space.
