MoonPay has unveiled a groundbreaking app within OpenAI’s ChatGPT, enabling users to generate cryptocurrency purchase links directly from the chatbot. This new feature permits those interested in buying digital assets—such as Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC—to do so without leaving the ChatGPT interface. However, users must still complete MoonPay’s standard Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures and checkout process prior to making any purchases.
This development signals MoonPay’s recognition of AI-driven platforms as emerging distribution channels for cryptocurrency services. The ChatGPT app joins a growing suite of crypto-focused tools available within the chatbot, alongside established names like Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen.
Kevin Arifin, a Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead at MoonPay, commented on the increasing overlap between AI and commerce. He noted that while many users previously relied on ChatGPT for shopping recommendations, financial research is also becoming commonplace. Arifin expressed surprise that no cryptocurrency purchasing option existed within the platform until now.
Within the app, users can simply inquire about their preferred cryptocurrencies and prompt the chatbot to facilitate a purchase. The moonpay integration generates a checkout link that redirects users to the MoonPay site for the KYC process and wallet linking.
Describing the app, Arifin explained, “It’s like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you’re buying.” He emphasized that ChatGPT serves as an ideal platform for this kind of educational interaction.
For users who have previously completed the KYC setup with MoonPay, the process is streamlined. They can sign in to their existing MoonPay accounts, use stored payment methods, and have their purchases delivered to their specified wallets.
The launch of this app is part of a broader strategy by MoonPay to integrate AI into its offerings. Earlier this month, the company acquired AI trading startup Dawn Labs and launched Dawn CLI, a feature that turns natural language prompts into automated market strategies. Additionally, MoonPay introduced the MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard that lets AI agents spend stablecoins at online merchants.
Arifin indicated that while the app is not intended for autonomous AI trading, it aims to empower everyday users to better understand cryptocurrency through conversational interactions. He noted, “Being able to talk in ChatGPT is a huge unlock. I think that’s what’s been lacking overall.”
Despite the convenience offered by the ChatGPT app, Arifin acknowledged the limitation of users being confined to OpenAI’s ecosystem. He pointed out the significance of emerging AI clients like OpenClaw and Hermes, which allow AI agents to run locally and interact with a user’s device more directly.
Arifin concluded that platforms like ChatGPT and other chatbots are becoming essential gateways for crypto adoption. “These apps, whether it’s ChatGPT or Claude, are the new front door of the internet,” he said, highlighting how users engage in deeper research through AI interaction compared to traditional browsing methods.
