KENTUCKY – TeraWulf, a prominent bitcoin mining company, has announced its plans to expand operations in eastern Kentucky with the acquisition of the Muskie Data Campus, a high-performance computing development site. This strategic move indicates the company’s commitment to significantly enhancing its infrastructure and operational capacity in the region.
The Muskie Data Campus, located within the 1,000-acre Eastpark Industrial Park, has the potential to support over one gigawatt of data center capacity, which is a substantial increase in the area’s technological capabilities. Initially, TeraWulf plans to activate 500 megawatts of this capacity in the latter half of 2028, with an additional 500 megawatts projected for 2030. This dual-phase rollout underlines the company’s long-term vision for growth in the burgeoning field of cryptocurrency and computing services.
A key aspect of this development is the planned upgrades to the power infrastructure in the area. The project will include the construction of a 345-kilovolt substation that will connect to the existing 765-kilovolt transmission network, ensuring a reliable and redundant power supply. As power access and transmission capacity are deemed crucial constraints for large-scale artificial intelligence and computing projects, TeraWulf’s initiative is positioned to alleviate these issues.
Company leaders have emphasized the importance of the campus as a “shovel-ready” site. They believe this development will catalyze construction efforts, create long-term skilled job opportunities, and attract new investments into the region.
