More than 500,000 homeowners on Long Island are set to benefit from the New York School Tax Relief (STAR) program, with a total of $659.2 million in tax relief being distributed starting this summer. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that approximately 572,000 Long Island homeowners will receive either a STAR credit or STAR exemption on their school tax bills.
This year’s figures show a slight decrease from the previous year’s numbers, which reported 582,000 participants who collectively received $698.4 million in tax relief. According to the New York State Tax Department, such fluctuations are expected and can be attributed to several factors, including changes in household income and real estate transactions. For instance, some homeowners may no longer qualify if their incomes exceed the $500,000 threshold set for STAR participation. Additionally, home sales and the timing of closings can influence eligibility, while personal circumstances such as deaths and estate settlements further affect participation numbers.
Across the state, more than $2 billion is slated to be provided in tax relief to approximately 2.78 million New Yorkers by fall. Homeowners with combined household incomes below $500,000 can expect a credit ranging from $350 to $600. Seniors who are enrolled in the program and have an income below $110,750 may receive credits between $700 and $1,500.
Recipients of the tax credit can anticipate receiving their checks via mail during the summer or fall. Homeowners also have the option to enroll in direct deposit and track their check deliveries through the state’s website, ny.gov/STAR.
To assist residents with the enrollment process and to help them maximize their benefits, the tax department will be hosting regional STAR seminars throughout the state. For Long Island residents, a seminar will take place in Nassau County on July 28 at East Meadow Public Library, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. A session will also be held in Suffolk County on July 29 at Middle Country Public Library in Selden, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
