United States stock markets will observe a closure on Friday, June 19, in recognition of Juneteenth, marking a significant day in American history. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will remain shuttered for the day, resuming operations on Monday, June 22. Alongside the stock markets, the U.S. bond market will also be closed on this date, as stated by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Juneteenth, recognized as America’s Second Independence Day, has been a federally-designated holiday since 2021. This designation allows millions of Americans the opportunity to take a paid day off to reflect on and commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday traces its origins to June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with approximately 2,000 Union troops. He announced the liberation of over 250,000 enslaved Black individuals in the state, a significant milestone occurring two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was enacted on January 1, 1863.

Following the observance of Juneteenth, it will be business as usual for Wall Street, which will remain open until the next scheduled market closure on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day.

For those looking ahead, the holiday schedule for the U.S. stock markets in 2026 includes several notable closures:

– Juneteenth: Friday, June 19
– Independence Day: Friday, July 3
– Labor Day: Monday, September 7
– Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 26
– Christmas: Friday, December 25
