Meta has announced a pause on its controversial employee tracking program known as the Model Compatibility Initiative (MCI) following an internal security issue that exposed potentially sensitive data to other employees. Tracy Clayton, a spokesperson for the company, emphasized that while the program was designed with privacy safeguards in mind, there is no current indication that any data was accessed improperly by employees. Nonetheless, a thorough investigation is underway.

The MCI tool, launched in April for U.S. employees, was intended to gather various forms of computer inputs, including mouse movements, click locations, keystrokes, and screen content. This initiative faced significant backlash from the workforce, raising urgent concerns over privacy, security, and personal freedoms. Initially, employees were unable to opt out of the program, but after protests, the company allowed for limited opt-out options.

Meta executives have strongly defended the rationale behind the data collection, arguing that it is essential for training artificial intelligence systems to mimic human interactions with software. Employees were considered to be the most effective models for this training, they claimed.

However, the situation took a serious turn when a Meta engineer issued an internal notice revealing that databases containing information collected by MCI had been inadvertently exposed within the company. A former employee, who was actively involved in the opposition to MCI, described the security lapse as “a mess” and something that many employees had anticipated. They criticized company leadership for their rigid stance, claiming that executives disregarded the risks employees had voiced concerning the safety and privacy of both worker and customer data. “Leadership has clearly created an authoritarian environment where workers are no longer respected or heard,” the ex-employee stated.

The internal backlash intensified on Monday, with critical comments flooding internal forums as employees expressed their frustration over the security breach. In a surprising turn of events, Meta decided to pause the MCI program entirely. This decision was communicated to WIRED prior to being announced to the broader employee base, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
