The U.S. stock market is set to observe a closure in observance of Independence Day this year, impacting trading schedules for investors and traders alike. As Independence Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed on the nearest weekday, which is Friday, July 3. Both exchanges will resume regular trading hours on Monday, July 6, following the holiday weekend.
The last full trading day before the holiday will be Thursday, July 2, 2026. Regular trading hours for both the NYSE and Nasdaq are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET on weekdays, excluding weekends and federal holidays. As part of the official holiday schedule, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management recognizes Independence Day as a federal holiday, necessitating the market closures.
In addition to observing Independence Day, both the NYSE and Nasdaq have outlined their closure schedule for the remainder of the calendar year. Upcoming closures include Labor Day, which will see the markets shut on Monday, September 7; Thanksgiving Day, with a closure on Thursday, November 26, and an early closing at 1 p.m. ET on November 27; and Christmas Day, when trading will be closed on Friday, December 25, along with an early closing at 1 p.m. ET on December 24.
Investors are reminded to plan their trading activities accordingly, particularly with the upcoming Independence Day-related closure.
