American Airlines has announced plans to equip over 500 of its narrow-body aircraft with Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This decision marks a significant partnership for the airline, which was contemplating both Starlink and Amazon’s LEO satellite internet service earlier this year.
Starting in early 2024, the airline will install Starlink systems on approximately 500 Airbus A321neo planes. However, as of now, American Airlines has no immediate plans to alter the in-flight internet providers for its Boeing fleet, which currently utilizes a combination of services from Viasat and Panasonic.
This move comes in the wake of American’s recent introduction of complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi for members of its frequent flyer program, making it the latest airline to enhance its connectivity options. Other major carriers, including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, have also been upgrading their in-flight internet services, with Delta specifically announcing its partnership with Amazon’s LEO system to service hundreds of jets starting in 2028.
In this competitive landscape, airlines are vying to attract higher-spending customers by providing faster, more reliable in-flight internet options. This trend is not only about improving customer satisfaction but also about exploring additional revenue streams. Some airlines are considering personalized advertising and other strategies that could enhance the passenger experience while increasing profitability.
On a broader scale, SpaceX has also been making headlines, as it prepares for a highly anticipated public offering, which could set records in the IPO space. The revenue generated by its connectivity division, including Starlink, reached $11.39 billion last year, accounting for 61% of the company’s total sales, according to recent filings related to the upcoming IPO.
This development in the aviation sector is indicative of the ongoing transformation as airlines continue to modernize and adapt to the evolving demands of their customers.
