Americans Prepare for Independence Day Weekend: What’s Open and Closed on July 3

As Independence Day approaches, many Americans are scrambling to finalize their holiday preparations, leading to heightened interest in the operational status of various services for the upcoming weekend. One of the most common questions being asked is whether the post office, banks, the stock market, and stores will be open on July 3.

This year, July 4 falls on a Saturday, which has led many federal agencies and financial institutions to observe the holiday on Friday, July 3. This scheduling has created some uncertainty regarding hours of operation for essential services as families make last-minute plans for their holiday festivities.

For those wondering about mail delivery, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is expected to operate as usual on Friday, July 3. This includes both regular mail delivery and retail services at post office locations. However, the Postal Service will close its offices and suspend mail delivery on Saturday, July 4, resuming normal operations on Monday, July 6.

When it comes to banking, most banks are anticipated to remain open on July 3, although some branches may adjust their hours depending on the financial institution and specific location. It’s advisable for customers to directly check with their local branches for any changes in operating hours. While banks may have modified schedules, ATM, online, and mobile banking services should function as normal.

In contrast, the stock market will not be open on July 3. Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close in observance of Independence Day, with trading set to resume on Monday, July 6. It’s worth noting that related trading sessions from NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National, and NYSE Texas will also be closed for the day.

Regarding government offices, many federal facilities will be shuttered on July 3 as the observance of Independence Day takes precedence. Operating hours for state and local government offices may differ depending on their specific locations, so residents are encouraged to confirm schedules, particularly for motor vehicle departments, courthouses, and municipal buildings.

Delivery services from FedEx and UPS will continue on July 3, although modifications might be in effect in certain areas. FedEx has announced a change in operations leading up to the holiday, while UPS plans to function normally, with delivery and pickup schedules possibly varying by location and service type.

Most major grocery stores, pharmacies, and retailers are expected to remain open on July 3, catering to those making last-minute purchases for holiday celebrations. However, some businesses may operate under reduced hours as the day progresses. Shoppers are advised to consult individual stores in advance.

In summary, while several services will close in observance of Independence Day on Saturday, July 4, others will remain open on July 3 to accommodate holiday preparations. As the weekend approaches, it is recommended that individuals check on specific hours before making any trips, especially for mail delivery, banking services, and retail shopping.
