Anthropic Ends Third-Party Support for Claude Models, Introduces Pay-as-You-Go System

Subscribers to Anthropic’s Claude Pro and Max plans, which range from $20 to $200 monthly, were met with significant changes that could affect their use of third-party AI tools. Starting April 4, 2026, at noon PT, subscriptions will no longer allow direct integration of Claude models with tools like OpenClaw, a third-party AI agent. This shift comes as a response to the increasing computational demands and usage patterns that were straining Anthropic’s resources.

Boris Cherny, the Head of Claude Code at Anthropic, highlighted this decision in a post on social media platform X, stating that the company has been grappling with an overwhelming demand for its Claude models. “We’ve been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren’t built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully,” he wrote. Subscribers received emails outlining this policy change, although it remains unclear how it will impact those on Claude Team and Enterprise plans.

While it will still be possible to use Claude models such as Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku in conjunction with third-party services, users will need to switch to a pay-as-you-go billing model for additional usage or utilize Anthropic’s application programming interface (API) for token-based billing. This change is meant to better manage the strain on Anthropic’s systems, attributed to the inefficiencies present in third-party tools compared to its first-party applications.

The company had initiated stricter session limits during business hours, constraining users’ token utilization and leading to frustration for many who rely heavily on these resources. Anthropic characterize this tightening as a necessary measure to manage demand, affecting only a small fraction of users at any time.

To soften the impact of these changes, Anthropic is offering existing subscribers a one-time credit equivalent to their monthly subscription cost, redeemable until April 17. Subscribers who pre-purchase the new “extra usage” bundles can benefit from discounts of up to 30%, which aims to retain users who might otherwise discontinue their subscriptions.

The response from the developer community has been mixed, ranging from acceptance to heightened frustration. Some developers see these changes as a clever business move, while others voice concerns about the sustainability of their projects under the new pricing model. Aakash Gupta, a growth marketer, remarked that the sudden cost increases could be significant for individual users, while Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, suggested that the timing of these changes is suspicious, hinting at a potential strategy by Anthropic to assert control over its market position.

As the AI landscape evolves, this development marks a shift towards prioritizing internal management of resources and profitability over open-source experimentation with third-party applications. The trend suggests a tightening grip on user autonomy and flexibility, particularly for those heavily invested in the broader ecosystem that has supported the growth of these AI capabilities. For typical users of Claude.ai, the experience will remain largely unchanged, but those operating advanced configurations may need to reconsider their approaches moving forward, as the days of unconstrained computational access for third-party automation appear to be over.
