Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the foremost cloud service providers, experienced significant operational disruptions starting Thursday, which subsequently impacted trading on various platforms, notably Coinbase and FanDuel. In a series of updates throughout the day, AWS indicated that full recovery from the outage could take “several hours,” with the restoration efforts proving more complex than initially anticipated.
The root cause of the outage was traced back to overheating issues at a data center within its primary US-East-1 region, located in northern Virginia. AWS clarified that the problems were confined to a “single Availability Zone” within this region. In a morning update, the company stated it was making strides in restoring service by bringing additional cooling system capacity online, which is essential for recovering the affected hardware in the compromised zone.
The AWS health dashboard first acknowledged the instance impairments around 8:25 p.m. ET on Thursday, indicating that the company was actively investigating the issues. As reports of the outage emerged, FanDuel, a popular sports-betting application, also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to inform users that they were aware of the technical difficulties preventing access to their services. A subsequent update confirmed that the problems were linked to the AWS outages, resulting in customer complaints regarding lost wagers due to an inability to cash out.
Similarly, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase communicated via X on Friday that failures across multiple AWS zones led to an extended suspension of their core trading services, though it later reported that the primary issue had been resolved.
AWS, which dominates approximately one-third of the cloud infrastructure market, provides critical services to millions of businesses worldwide, underscoring the ripple effects that such outages can have across various sectors. While the company continues to work on resolving the issues, users remain wary as they navigate the implications of this disruption on their trading activities.
