Crypto markets are on high alert as a pivotal announcement regarding the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is expected soon. Patrick Witt, the White House digital asset adviser, revealed at the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas that the Trump administration is preparing to disclose significant developments related to this reserve.
Witt, who holds the position of executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, noted that his team has cleared a significant legal barrier, allowing them to proceed swiftly with announcements that may come before any new legislation is introduced in Congress.
The U.S. government’s crypto holdings are considerable, with estimates suggesting that the federal government possesses around 328,372 BTC, valued at approximately $25 billion. This amount represents nearly 1.6% of all circulating Bitcoin. The bulk of these holdings was acquired through law enforcement actions involving seizures and forfeitures, rather than through transactions on cryptocurrency exchanges.
In March 2025, an executive order directed federal agencies to consolidate these Bitcoin holdings into a single reserve and prohibited the Treasury from selling any of these assets moving forward. Witt emphasized, however, that while executive action is a step forward, it is insufficient on its own. He underlined the necessity for legislation to solidify this arrangement and ensure long-term protection for taxpayers.
Over the past year, various agencies have collaborated to establish a shared custody and reporting framework for these assets, setting the groundwork for the anticipated update on the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Should Congress formalize this reserve, market analysts believe it could significantly influence expectations regarding Bitcoin’s future supply and federal policies related to digital assets.
The impending announcement is particularly timely, as Bitcoin has faced a downturn of 12% in market value so far in 2026. Positive news regarding the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve could serve as a much-needed boost for the cryptocurrency, rekindling investor interest amid a challenging market landscape.
