High-profile attendees included U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY), and leaders from the Bitcoin industry like Nakamoto CEO David Bailey and Galaxy Digital’s Alex Thorn. The event created a unique blend of individuals who typically engage on different platforms, enriching conversations as live music filled the spacious 12,000 square-foot venue.
PubKey co-founder Thomas Pacchia expressed his excitement about the launch. Despite the fatigue from preparations, he relished the buzz surrounding the event, noting that it felt surreal to host a gathering of such prominence even before the venue’s official opening next month. Pacchia, who previously operated a “dive bar” in New York, is eager to serve the local Bitcoin enthusiasts and create a welcoming space for diverse gatherings.
The road to opening this second location began with the launch of PubKey’s first bar in New York City in late 2022, amidst a downturn in the crypto market. Despite initial challenges, dedicated followers turned out for weekly events, connecting with renowned Bitcoin advocates. The establishment gained traction during the 2024 presidential campaign when Donald Trump visited, solidifying its reputation as a must-visit spot for Bitcoin supporters around the globe.
Reflecting on the community, Pacchia expressed gratitude for the increased space in D.C., noting how the original New York venue began to feel cramped. The new location offers a diverse setup, including two bars, a stage for live performances and discussions, a podcast studio, and dedicated areas for the Bitcoin Policy Institute. This convenience allows for a wider range of events, from fundraisers to conferences.
PubKey’s chief operating officer, Andrew Newman, highlighted the enthusiasm among the local Bitcoin community, particularly the “plebs,” or everyday Bitcoin enthusiasts. These individuals are actively working to foster a Bitcoin circular economy in the D.C. area, with initiatives like the Bitcoin District Initiative onboarding new vendors weekly.
Amid this exuberance, the Bitcoin Policy Institute also finds its new home in the establishment. This nonpartisan think tank has been influential in educating lawmakers on Bitcoin and advocating for relevant legislation. Co-founder David Zell emphasized the historical significance of bars as spaces for revolutionary dialogue, likening their mission to the foundational gatherings that shaped the nation.
As the team gears up for the upcoming grand opening, Pacchia remains cautious about setting specific dates due to pending permits. His vision extends beyond a single location, aspiring to see PubKeys spring up in cities across the U.S., with the amusing caveat of omitting Boston.
