Block’s CFO, Amrita Ah, elaborated on the recent decision to significantly reduce the workforce by 40% during a conference call last night. This move, she emphasized, is focused on transitioning to AI-driven work functions, a strategy that has been in development for some time.

During the call, Ah clarified that this decision was not made lightly or impulsively. The company has been on a transformative journey for approximately 18 months, utilizing their proprietary AI agents, codenamed “Goose.” The success of these tools in automating workflows has empowered the company to move forward more decisively rather than reacting slowly over time. Ah remarked, “We wanted to make a bold move here so that we could frankly be more front-footed in our stance.”

When discussing the rationale behind timing, Ah noted that the impetus for the layoffs came from observed productivity gains across various functions, particularly in engineering and customer service. She reported a 40% increase in efficiency per engineer in producing code since September, indicative of accelerated productivity within the tech team. Furthermore, 75% of customer service inquiries within Cash App are managed through automated systems, which have proven effective in delivering quicker responses to customers. This automation allows human employees to focus on strategic tasks that require more nuanced judgment.

Ah acknowledged that this shift is not limited to engineers; designers are now able to directly push code into production, and accountants are leveraging new tools to expedite workflows and derive insights more rapidly. This growing reliance on automation and advanced technology played a critical role in the decision to streamline the workforce.

For other CFOs pondering a similar move, Ah advised acting early rather than waiting too long. She underscored the importance of curiosity in understanding the potential of automation tools. She stated, “You often don’t get the aha moment until you realize you’ve automated a piece of your work. Something that might have taken days can now take hours or less.” Leaders, she explained, should focus on managing outcomes rather than just personnel, necessitating a deeper involvement in the mechanics of their operations to truly grasp the effectiveness and integrity of their systems.

Overall, Block’s strategic pivot towards AI and automation has resulted in a significant shift in operational efficiency, aiming to position the company at the forefront of industry innovation.
