A serious incident unfolded at a McDonald’s in Yuba City, California, leaving a 20-year-old employee, Jacob Smith, hospitalized with significant burns. The incident occurred on May 30 when Smith was preparing to leave work, confined in an office to count the day’s earnings. According to Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, he was unexpectedly attacked when a coworker threw hot oil at him.
The alleged assailant, identified as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, reportedly fled the scene. However, he was apprehended the next day by Sutter County deputies after being reported as missing. Following his arrest, Bluett was charged with multiple felonies, including felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. He has entered a plea of not guilty, and as of now, the motives behind the attack remain unclear. Bluett’s public defender has not commented on the situation.
As Jacob Smith continues to recover in the intensive care unit at UC Davis, his condition is described as severe. His injuries extend across one side of his face, neck, right arm, and back, leading to what his mother described as “excruciating” pain. Medical professionals are actively working to manage his burns and reduce their size to minimize the need for extensive skin grafts in the future.
In response to the incident, John Cook, the owner and operator of the Yuba City McDonald’s, expressed deep concern over the violent act. He confirmed that Bluett is no longer employed at the restaurant and emphasized the company’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its employees and patrons. Cook stated, “The serious incident that took place at our restaurant… is deeply concerning, and our focus is on supporting our employee, Jacob, as he recovers.”
As the investigation progresses, many in the community are rallying to support Jacob Smith during his recovery journey.
