The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has garnered praise as a top choice for travel enthusiasts, offering a combination of appealing benefits and valuable rewards for a reasonable annual fee of $95. Recently updated, the Sapphire Preferred has expanded its bonus categories, enhancing its value for various types of consumers from beginners to seasoned travelers.

Under its current promotional offer, applicants can earn an impressive 100,000 bonus points. The card’s structure is designed to provide generous rewards across numerous spending categories, including newly added options. Cardholders can now earn:

  • 5 points per dollar on all Chase Travel℠ purchases, Lyft rides (until September 30, 2027), and eligible Peloton products over $150 (until December 31, 2027), translating to an effective return of 10.3%.
  • 3 points per dollar on gas and electric vehicle charging, dining internationally (including takeout and delivery), vacation homes at eligible brands, top streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding select retailers).
  • 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases worldwide.
  • 1 point per dollar on all remaining purchases.

This revamp, particularly the addition of gas and EV charging as well as vacation home bookings, enhances the Sapphire Preferred’s appeal as a viable everyday spending card. In a competitive landscape, it now surpasses other premium cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, for certain categories, like vacation rentals.

In terms of potential earnings, the Sapphire Preferred is positioned favorably for several groups. For many newcomers to travel rewards, the card offers an uncomplicated route to maximizing points. For instance, a single user might spend around $1,455 monthly across various categories, potentially earning 17,460 points annually, valued at approximately $358—more than three times the card’s annual fee.

Families, who typically spend more in categories like dining and groceries, stand to benefit significantly as well. A family with an estimated monthly spend could accumulate 43,200 points yearly, translating to around $886 in value, more than nine times the annual fee. This level of earning can open up opportunities for meaningful travel experiences, such as multiple nights at hotels or flights.

Frequent travelers also find the Sapphire Preferred beneficial, especially with the card’s robust rewards structure for travel purchases. A high spender could amass around 42,840 points over a year just from the bonus categories, which equates to nearly $878 in value. This earning potential not only maximizes day-to-day purchases but also opens doors for aspirational travel, including business-class flights to international destinations.

However, it’s essential to note that while the Sapphire Preferred excels in many areas, it may not suit everyone, particularly those who prefer straightforward cash-back rewards or those who do not travel frequently enough to take full advantage of its benefits and the value of Chase’s transfer partners.

With its appealing rewards structure and practical benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card stands out as an excellent option for a wide range of spenders, making it a strong candidate for those looking to simplify their rewards strategy without sacrificing earning potential.
