Tom Duff Gordon, the vice president of international policy at the U.S.-listed cryptocurrency platform Coinbase, has departed from the company after nearly four years of service. In his new role, Duff Gordon will lead EMEA Policy at OpenAI, a move confirmed by a Coinbase spokesperson through email communication.

Prior to his tenure at Coinbase, Duff Gordon spent over eight years at Credit Suisse, where he honed his skills in financial services and banking. His extensive background positioned him as a knowledgeable advocate for cryptocurrency regulations, making substantial contributions to discussions around compliance and industry standards.

His departure comes at a time when the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies is undergoing significant scrutiny. Recently, Duff Gordon has raised concerns about the challenges faced by customers in the U.K. banking sector, noting that many banks are preventing millions of individuals from accessing legal and compliant cryptocurrency services. He criticized these institutions for failing to effectively differentiate between Financial Conduct Authority-registered firms that maintain low fraud rates and higher-risk operators.

As he transitions to OpenAI, Duff Gordon’s expertise in crypto regulations may play a vital role in shaping the organization’s approach to policy in the evolving tech landscape. The move marks a significant step in his career, reflecting a shift in focus from cryptocurrency to artificial intelligence policy.
