Crypto.com has initiated legal action against an individual and his company following allegations of trademark fraud concerning a hashtag that the platform frequently uses in its marketing efforts. The complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, accuses Nathan Steele, the founder of Crofam.com LLC, of obtaining trademarks for the terms “Crofam” and “#Crofam” through deceptive practices.
According to the complaint, Steele misrepresented the usage of these marks, claiming that his company had legitimate rights to them. However, Crypto.com asserts that the “Crofam” brand and hashtag have been in use to promote its popular cryptocurrency, Cronos, long before Steele established his company.
The allegations indicate that Steele’s actions have caused confusion among consumers and potentially diluted the value of Crypto.com’s established brand. The trading platform is pursuing multiple legal claims against both Steele and Crofam.com, including allegations of unfair competition and common law trademark infringement.
By taking this step, Crypto.com aims to protect its intellectual property and maintain the integrity of its marketing efforts, as the use of the trademarked terms is integral to its branding strategy. The company’s lawsuit not only seeks to rectify the alleged misrepresentation but also to prevent any further infringement on its trademark rights.
