Crypto.com has taken legal action against a customer for allegedly obtaining trademarks related to a hashtag that the trading platform frequently uses in its marketing efforts for a well-known cryptocurrency. The company has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, claiming that Nathan Steele, the founder of Crofam.com LLC, fraudulently secured trademarks for “Crofam” and “#Crofam.”

According to the complaint, Steele misrepresented the usage of these trademarks by his company. Crypto.com argues that the disputed marks were already in use to promote its popular cryptocurrency, Cronos, long before Steele initiated his trademark claims. This legal action highlights concerns about unfair competition and common law trademark infringement, with Crypto.com asserting that Steele’s actions have caused confusion and harm to its brand.

In the complaint, Crypto.com emphasizes that it has utilized the “#Crofam” hashtag as part of its marketing strategy, underscoring its longstanding association with the Cronos cryptocurrency. The company seeks to protect its intellectual property and maintain its branding efforts against what it describes as misleading and deceptive practices by Steele.

By filing this lawsuit, Crypto.com aims to not only reclaim its trademark rights but also to send a message regarding the integrity of trademark registrations and the potential ramifications of misrepresenting brand usage in the cryptocurrency sector. The case serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing battles over intellectual property in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
