In a pivotal trade that has reshaped the Detroit Lions’ franchise, the team relinquished quarterback Matthew Stafford on January 30, 2021. In exchange, the Lions acquired quarterback Jared Goff, along with a significant cache of draft picks: first-round selections in 2022 and 2023, and a third-round pick in 2021. Initially viewed as a straightforward swap of quarterbacks, the transaction has proven to be a catalyst for transformative changes within the organization.
Jared Goff, the centerpiece of this trade, has redefined his career in Detroit. Once viewed as expendable by his previous team, Goff has since emerged as a key player, throwing for at least 29 touchdowns in each of his last three seasons. His strong performances culminated in a fifth-place finish in the NFL MVP voting in 2024. While he initially expressed frustration about being sent to what he called “a place to die,” Goff has since embraced his situation in Detroit, referring to the trade as “the greatest thing that ever happened to me.” Over the past four seasons, he has started every game, solidifying his position as a franchise quarterback.
The Lions’ strategic use of the draft picks acquired in the Stafford trade has yielded further valuable assets. One notable selection was Ifeatu Melifonwu, chosen with the third-round pick from the Rams in the 2021 draft. Melifonwu quickly became a contributor on defense, starting 11 games over his first three seasons and enjoying his best year in 2023 with two interceptions, three sacks, and eight passes defended. However, injuries plagued him in 2024, leading to limited participation that season before signing with the Miami Dolphins in free agency in 2025.
Another significant move involved the first-round pick acquired in the trade. The Lions packaged this asset, along with another pick, to move up in the 2022 draft and select wide receiver Jameson Williams. After injury setbacks early in his career, Williams has since demonstrated his potential, recording a 1,001-yard season with 58 receptions and seven touchdowns in 2024. He is on track to surpass the 1,000-yard threshold again in 2025 and even secured a lucrative three-year, $83 million contract extension in September.
Additionally, the 2022 draft brought the Lions defensive end Josh Paschal, selected with their second-round pick from Minnesota. Paschal quickly became a staple of the defensive line, starting multiple games in his first few seasons. However, injury issues have kept him off the field in the 2025 season thus far.
The Lions also utilized the draft capital smartly to acquire running back Jahmyr Gibbs. After the Rams’ disappointing 2022 campaign, which placed the Lions as the beneficiaries of a high draft pick, general manager Brad Holmes maneuvered to select Gibbs at No. 12 overall. Initially met with skepticism, Gibbs has flourished in his third season, ranking among the league leaders in total touchdowns and averaging impressive yardage per game. He currently stands tied with Detroit legend Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns in NFL history before the age of 24.
The organization also capitalized on opportunities in later rounds. Tight end Sam LaPorta, selected 34th overall in the 2023 draft, broke the NFL rookie record for receptions by a tight end in a single season and made an immediate impact with 10 touchdown catches. Unfortunately, LaPorta has been sidelined since mid-November due to back surgery following an injury.
Lastly, defensive tackle Brodric Martin was the final player associated with the Stafford trade. Selected 96th overall, Martin struggled to find his footing during his early career with the Lions, ultimately leading to his release before the 2025 season.
Overall, the trade of Matthew Stafford ignited a wave of strategic decisions that reshaped the Detroit Lions’ roster. With Goff leading the charge and a host of promising talents emerging from subsequent drafts, the organization appears well-positioned for future success.
