Emerging hedge fund managers gathered at the Sohn San Francisco Investment Conference on Tuesday to showcase their top investment ideas, spanning innovative technologies and strategic trades. The spotlight was on a range of promising opportunities, with artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency taking center stage.
Ravi Paidipaty of Freestone Grove Partners put forth a compelling case for Semtech Corporation, a mixed signal semiconductor company. Paidipaty emphasized the company’s potential in next-generation AI data center connectivity, which is expected to catalyze accelerating growth, margin expansion, and significant revisions to earnings forecasts. He expressed optimism regarding the newly appointed CEO, Hong Hou, and noted that under Hou’s leadership, there has been a strong focus on both internal and external execution. Paidipaty projects a striking 65% growth in earnings per share for Semtech in the mid-term, with the company’s long-term earnings potential set to exceed double its current levels.
Turning to cryptocurrency, Franklin Parlamis from Aequim Alternative Investments presented an intriguing long short trade involving bitcoin. His proposed strategy is to buy a bitcoin ETF while simultaneously shorting Strategy, a software and cloud company that also serves as a bitcoin treasury. This firm holds a staggering nearly $70 billion in bitcoin, having utilized leverage to build its crypto stockpile. Parlamis highlighted the disparity between the company’s stock price and its actual bitcoin holdings, noting a premium close to 50%. “In Strategy, you’re paying nearly a 50% premium for the bitcoin,” he remarked, suggesting a potentially lucrative opportunity.
In the e-commerce sector, Louis Chang of Gavilan Investment Partners championed Coupang, a leading South Korean e-commerce platform. He described Coupang not only as the largest operator in South Korea but also as one of the fastest-growing e-commerce businesses on a global scale. Chang highlighted the impressive reach of Coupang, stating that nearly half of South Korea’s population engages with the platform regularly. He credited the company’s ‘virtuous flywheel’ — a model driven by exceptionally customer-friendly services — as pivotal to its success. Over the next three to five years, Chang forecasts that Coupang shares could double in his base case scenario and potentially triple in an optimistic outlook.
