A prominent French AI startup, Mistral, has announced a significant milestone in its growth by securing $830 million in debt financing aimed at developing a data center equipped with thousands of Nvidia chips. Established in 2023, Mistral is one of the select few European enterprises dedicated to constructing foundational AI models, positioning itself to compete against major players like OpenAI and Anthropic, albeit with a considerably more limited financial base.

In its pursuit of expanding the infrastructure necessary for AI capabilities, Mistral revealed a comprehensive 1.2 billion euro plan in February to enhance data centers and computing resources in Sweden. This expansion is viewed as essential for empowering Mistral’s clientele while ensuring that AI innovation and self-sufficiency remain central to European efforts.

Mistral’s CEO, Arthur Mensch, emphasized the urgency of scaling infrastructure within Europe to meet the rising demand from governments, enterprises, and research organizations seeking to establish customized AI environments independent of external cloud services.

The funding transaction was orchestrated with the backing of a consortium of seven global banks, including notable names such as Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, and Natixis CIB. The data center chosen for this initiative, located near Paris, is projected to streamline the training of Mistral’s AI models and provide inference services. It is anticipated to commence operations in the second quarter of this year.

This new data center will utilize 13,800 Nvidia GB300 graphics processing units (GPUs), achieving a total capacity of 44 megawatts (MW). Mistral has ambitious plans to expand its total capacity to 200 MW across Europe by the end of 2027.

While Mistral stands as the most well-funded builder of large language models (LLMs) in Europe, with a total fundraising of approximately $2.9 billion, this figure pales in comparison to the significant investments secured by its U.S. counterparts. OpenAI, for instance, has raised an astounding $180 billion, while Anthropic’s funding stands at around $59 billion, according to figures from Dealroom.

Despite this disparity, there is a burgeoning trend of European AI startups attracting substantial investment. In 2026 alone, U.K.-based data center company Nscale and autonomous driving startup Wayve raised $2 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, while France’s AMI Labs garnered $1 billion.

As the landscape of AI development continues to evolve, Mistral’s strategic investments and commitment to expanding its capabilities reflect a broader trend in Europe, where the growth of AI technology is being increasingly prioritized by both private industry and public entities.
